The reason why I'm using the word mastermind is that because it takes quite a lot of courage to come out with a brand new design and be one of the first ones in the industry to set a status quo, especially with all the commercial risks involved and the amount of money that is being put into the R&D and

So needless to say, Stefan and his team have been at the forefront of paragliding innovation as they were the first ones to come out with this brand new concept of two liner ENC. Yeah, I heard you are trying to be one of the fittest paragliding designers out there, smashing an Ironman very soon. So I think life seems exciting in the air and also on the ground. But if you can give us a little bit of a history, what's going on? Yeah, you know, it's, well, I

don't know if this is a big deal, but I think it's important to set some goals in your life. And currently, you know, paragliding i did i'm flying since 35 years now and achieved a lot of things and yeah it's always to expand your horizon and currently the last past years it's more like yeah triathlon is so my my thing it was just more like an accident that i get to got to this but now i carry on and i get really motivated and training and but it gives so much insight to to the body, how it's evolving, developing, what you can do, what you can achieve.

It's also for your health and your nutrition. It's so complex, all the thing, and so interesting. And yeah, I'm setting my goals now in this, another sport, like say, not giving up paragliding, don't worry, but it's, it's, it, it makes fun actually, you know, even it's, it's really cruel running a marathon in a, in a triathlon, but it, it, All over, it's fun and it's very positive, everything. So I just can recommend to everybody else, set yourself some goals which you think you can achieve, and then you really surprise yourself what is possible, what you can do. You never thought before it's possible. And then when you've done it, you say, oh, I've done it. I never thought it's possible. And

and, you know, you have always tried to probably, you know, try and make the most of what you have. So can you just tell us a little of a journey, like how did designing come into your life? I mean, of course, all of us start with flying and the fascination for aviation and everything. How did you decide that, okay, you know, about time I start putting my mind, body and soul into creating something because i love the i mean there are a lot of things that we will eventually talk about but the the the outer look or the design of the air design wings the way you guys color them and

the way you have the the lines displaying over them it's it's like it it depicts a little bit of a flow state to me so i'm just curious like what was the mindset that went behind creating something like this eventually and how did you reach this stage in your life Well, I started paragliding

in 1988. So it sounds a really long time ago. Actually, it is. And from the beginning on, I felt really comfortable with paragliding. I was progressing very fast. So immediately after the course, I can stay longer in the air than the others. I have more control about the glider. I enjoyed it more. And so the first things we started doing, you know, the gliders these days, they have no performance at all. You know, it's like not paragliding, it was para-falling more or less. It's like skydiving kind of thing. Yeah, we were not really sure on the takeoff if we can make it over the trees. Even it was so steep. But it progressed and then I was one of the first ones started, yeah, sermeling and flying to the next

sermel and tried to figure out how to reach the next mountain. And then like this, the cross crunchy kind of developed in our area like this, you know, because then I showed the others, hey, this is working. We can fly further. And so, and at the same time, the paragliding design increased. And then I started because of the competing. First, it was just who can stay longest in the air. And then it was really like a spot landing. So very, yeah, nonsense competitions, actually. But it was kind of a competition. And I was always good on the front. so i enjoyed it and then the next cross country come and then the real competitions came where we're going on speed on turn points and stuff like this so it was

progressing very fast and i got a sponsor contract for competing so this was my entry into this kind of semi professional sport still i was working but yeah i was always supported and then i got a phone call not not that we are we're in the beginning from pro design They were looking for a test pilot. And I said, yeah, why not? So I started working really professionally as a test pilot and competing at the site. And then after four years working for ProDesign, I became a world champion in Japan. And this opened all the doors for every possibility. And I changed the company to UP, Ultralight Products. And then I was working also for test pilot and competition pilot. and then one day there's something

happened that the designer there is he said he's quitting he's leaving tomorrow if you want kind of you know but very short time and then it was like yeah if you want to take it over i give you an introduction into the design software and you can try doing it and and actually these days we were too it was torsion city and me and we said yeah why not then my thing was always you know we were testing but not the designer and it was always the point that i always had to get the feedback i had to get the feeling for the glider how it's feeling how it's performing if it's too dynamic or

too static and stuff like this so the other colors behaviors whatever but i had no in view deeper in inside view what in the design is affecting this behavior And this was always the missing link kind of, you know, and this was then the possibility to take, to get into the designing. It was very funny, just a short introduction, a few days into software like this. And I say, okay, now try to make your glider. And, but for me, it was kind of a eye opener because then I saw, ah, This profile is in this glider and that is why it's shooting like hell, you know, or we got this deep

store problem, you know? So I could combine the design and the practical experience I had with the glider, you know? And this is, I think, one of the keys of the success for my gliders because I do both. It's not separated. For sure, we have input from many pilots and test pilots, but it's like we have to be on on the same flow of understanding each other that we know what we do and what we yeah when we change something but it's changing actually on the glider and i know then actually you know because i designed it i have something in my back mind always you know why

i change the design whatever i want to improve something change the characteristics and then i fly it Then I know immediately, ah, okay, it's not working. It's working. Or this is very strange. And then we find out whatever. So it's always the combination between the practical experience, the feedback and to design and force and bake all the time, you know? And yeah, from that time on, you know, it was actually more or less, uh, It's like collecting experience on the design side and on the practical side, on the test side, on the input. So it never stops. It's never the same. You can't say you design a glider, make small modifications. Okay, you want this new prototype, very similar,

completely different in the reality. It's a living thing. Like somebody said once. That's true. Yeah. And then UB also came to an end and a former colleague from me, Martin Gostner, contacted me. And by the short kind of internet set airwave, but this work didn't work out internally. But Martin and we, we came together and say, okay, we're doing this now since almost 30 years or whatever. He's very, you know, into the sales ship and I'm into the science. So, and we have a lot of ideas and we cannot realize them anymore, you know, like being an employee and not your own boss. And we have, so we're just stuck somewhere, you know? So we said, so why not doing it on company and try to realize what we want to

do. And actually this was the beginning of air design and it works like we thought, you know, we're making paragliders and we have pretty some models in our range, which are in the beginning. Now they're the best selling models actually. But in beginning, it was kind of a crazy concept where they said, What for? We need an A, a B, a C glider. You know, this is the mainstream. We have to sell gliders. We have to make profit, whatever. We have to live in, even we don't get rich, but somehow we have to fill the boxes, you know? What is it? Yeah, but I, for I can fly, I want a

glider like this, you know? And it's not on the market. It's not there. It's existing. So I make one, you know? So that's why, for example, the Susi, yeah, was created because I wanted to have a small light glider, which performs very good, pretty well. and ticks all these boxes and but it's not you cannot put it in a standard category for example so Yeah, we do a lot of things which sounds a bit crazy sometimes, like making a two-line Susie, which is then the loco glider, for example. So we had no clue for what this glider is, you know, actually. But it was fun to make it

and it's fun to fly it. So we said, okay, let's certify because we can do it and it works. So why not just bring it, do something completely different, you know. It's not always thinking in boxes. It's more like, okay, you have to be open-minded all the time, get input, and not try to follow everybody or anything. Just go your own way. And if you think, oh, this could be interesting, just try it out, try it out. You never know. Wow. I think what really fascinates me about this story is that you just were chasing passion since day one without any set specific goals and

everything else just came your way naturally. And I think that's what eventually happens when you do something with all your heart and soul. Things just work out. All you have to have is the will and put in the effort. So I think that's a very... Very good progression, I must say, from an athlete to a designer to a manufacturer to a brand owner or something like that. Yeah, I would not say that everything happened by

You're not sure there were certain goals that you want to achieve, but somehow you were right to say that this is like, okay, it worked out like this and it progressed and evolved like this all the time, all the time. So actually this point where I'm sitting now, where I'm rich now, actually somehow I also feel that okay this has i got to this point i don't know why you know even you know for sure it's it's there's a structure and there are goals step by step whatever but something's just involved and that makes the next thing possible that's the point yeah Got it. But I just want to quickly touch upon the fact that from the transition from an athletic career to sitting behind

a desk, like, you know, being a world champion and kind of chasing all the airtime and, you know, all the glory that comes with it and pushing the speed bar and leaving your competitors behind is a quite fulfilling feeling in itself. And eventually when you have to switch over to a screen and try to have a nine to five in your life, I mean, kind of, I mean, it's far away from a nine to five, but still, was it a hard transition? Did you have to kind of, you know, ask, I mean, convince yourself that, okay, now this is where money is and this is where I need to kind of put in my

resources? Or did it just like, okay, this is a part of life and you just very easily cruised into your new role or just like life just happened that way like how did athletic transition from an athlete to a to an employee or a owner business owner happen well actually this this transition to to do both things i think this made a lot of things easier i would say it's not it's not as a test pilot you yeah you stuck because you

can't do more than just testing and giving feedback but as designing and testing yeah you you do both and you can really progress you do one step after the other for sure it's a much more much more time involved you spend it but you don't count it really because you see the progress so you go on and you accept it and and so on yeah and and the same is like being an employee or or having your own company Yeah, it's the same. You're not working from nine to five. You work whenever the weather is fine or it's needed or sometimes more, sometimes less. Sometimes I take my time off.

Sometimes I have to take time where I don't have time for working or solving things or drive to Switzerland for 10, 15, 14 hours out and back one day just to make things happen. And normally as an employee, you wouldn't do that. whatever. But it's, you're not counting this. It's always the project, the goal, the motivation is still there. And yeah, that keeps going. Now, so I think you're basically stressing on the fact

we founded Edesign, we were really working really hard. And both my colleague and me, we were really close for burnout. So we were really working too much. But this is also a process where you have to start learning to stop at a certain point. To say, okay, it's not... You can't do more than what is ours today. So you have to stop, come to an end, switch off. And switching off, it's not only switching off the computer, it's also switching off your brain. This is the most important thing. And this is very hard. It's a very tough experience that you get to this point where you say, okay, there's no other chance. Now you're saying, okay, if I'm not stopping now, you kill yourself, actually. I think this is a

Yeah, this is a social disease, I would say, of our community worldwide everywhere. But yeah, it's a process you have to learn for yourself. Everybody has to learn this stuff. And it's like when you take things a little bit more relaxed, The funny thing is you put less working hours into everything currently like this, but the result is much more than before where I was stressed from morning to night. And it's like I went to sleep and designing in my dreams, whatever. And then in the morning waking up and say, oh, I have to empty my brain, go switching off the computer and stuff like this. But this makes you completely mad. I think I have a thing or two to learn because that is, as I was telling you

yesterday, I was kind of in that same drive mode that, oh my God, this is all I have to do. But anyways, without deviating from the talk, let me backtrack you a little bit to the beginning of paragliding, as you said, because you've seen the wings from the time when it was very hard to get the minimal glide ratio back. to a point where you guys are pioneering in the industry and bringing out a second generation of a whole new technology of two-liner Cs. So what has been the philosophy of the wings? You know, we have seen like crazy wings come out and people chasing more penetration, more glide, and yet eventually safety also became a part of the whole scenario. Like R11 was there. I mean, on

YouTube, there's a famous wing called Death Blade and all of that. So eventually we decided as a community that not to push performance and bring in the safety aspect, but How do you think paragliding has evolved and what has been the mindset from the very early days when even transitioning from one thermal to other was a question until now when we are just smashing 600 plus kilometers in world records? How has the journey been from your eyes as a designer and as an athlete? That's a big topic. Yeah. Sorry to ask you an open-ended question, but Mike, it's you who has seen this from day one. I had to bring it out. Yeah. In the beginning, the gliders progressed so fast. And in the beginning, the

gliders actually, when I look back, there were some models which are really scary, dangerous. And a lot of accidents happened at that time. and my my motivation was always you know for sure i had accidents as well and you know afterwards you analyze it and say okay why did something happen because you want to keep on flying. And if I don't know why something happens, I probably will stop because I cannot solve my fears. So I need to, I need to need to know why things are happening. And I think maybe this is kind of a background when I started making paragliding. It's also kind of philosophy, how I do the gliders. It's like, I always have this, maybe a little bit conservative in terms of

safety. And durability and everything, what makes you comfortable in flight. Not pushing the limits sometimes so hard. Even sometimes I try to push the limits, but I always end up in a very comfortable glider. That's very funny. I don't know why. Yeah, I think it's always, you know, when I look, when I go outside, I go to visit the flight school nearby or when I go up the hill and I see the students and the training here on the takeoff, then you see the different level of pilots. It's also a matter that I can feel like they feel and what their ability is. And I watch them

all the time, you know. So I see what are the demands on the A glider, B glider, C glider, or where you shift the behavior of a glider and the design then. Because we have to make the gliders for the pilots to... And not for a category, actually. The category is just the finalization of the certification. But actually, the glider itself has to work for the abilities and the demands for A pilot or B pilot, for example. And this is actually the main work in the design process, besides the certification and everything. So the flying characteristics is always the thing. No, makes sense. Makes sense. And I think this resonates a bit with your philosophy of air design that have fun and be a

rebel at the same time. So I think as long as it puts a smile on your face while you're putting your glider in the air and, you know, making, making airtime with it. It's always the best thing if there's a customer comes back and says, okay, I like your glider and it makes me so happy and

It's just like, okay, yeah, we put a lot of effort in and this is the payback then. yes it's like yeah it's like that's your profit yeah it's your earning actually and the other thing is like when you say when you mentioned when osun came out with the two-line concept for sure this is something very interesting and it was clear that this opens a new a new yeah design philosophy and a new approach and a new category of gliders on the market and yeah and from the beginning on i was always interested how this is How is this working? Because logically, just making a glider and reducing the line attachments, it wouldn't work. So we have to rethink completely

And in the past years it was the major work happened all just to find out how to make this work and then how to make it work for the performance and for the safety and so on there and then when you know where what what is happening in this construct for for example because it's a very high complicated flexible and stiff whatever it's so yes it's pretty complicated when it's finally it's very simple But as long as it's not working, then it's very complicated. And now when you get to this point, when we got to this point where I say, okay, yeah, we have our

base of design and we know, okay, where we can screw, turn the screws to change the behavior or characteristic and where to... put the right trigger for the performance and the floating and everything else. So now this is the funny thing where you can work and develop and move different directions or shift one project to another category like we did in the ENC then. So yeah, I think this two line glider is a complete new chapter in parallel gliding. Wow, good to hear that. But I think before we move on to the new tech of two-lighter, I just quickly want to touch

upon the philosophy of glider being considered as a living thing and the EN certification. Because for me, when I go out and fly my wings and I go out and kind of put them in different conditions, EN certification only makes sense to me up to a point before the real scenario and the actual air and how you handle the wing and everything comes in. So, I mean, to make it simpler, let's say when I look at my glider as a real thing, a real thing can have different behavior in different settings, right? If you put it in an easier setting, it will behave easier. If you put it in a difficult

setting, it will be difficult. So the stress or the essence of EN or the letter that is being given, how important is it from your point of view as a designer? Because I've seen few companies coming out and saying that we're just going to do stress load and we're not going to go in and get the numbers because they are only valid in calm air. And as a manufacturer, because I've tried divulging into that side a little bit, and the amount of money that a manufacturer has to bring in to get Ian certified, just the fee and the cost structure of that is quite substantial. So what I'm

trying to understand is, is Ian really even helping the community, or is it just holding back the progression or the design in that direction? How do you look at the importance of Ian certification? Well, first I have to say maybe there's a lot of misunderstanding about the EN-NOM on

What the EN norm actually rates

the market because the EN-NOM is a standardized procedure to rate a paraglider in certain maneuvers. That means to give a certain rating, the maneuver has to be very strictly made, always the same maneuver, you know, otherwise you cannot compare it and then you cannot rank it. So in the worst case, scenario the glider behaves practically completely different then it reacts to this certain specific maneuver for example you know for example you have to make a collapse which is exactly in this angle of in this field on the paraglider you may have to mark the paraglider with a 70 percent collapse for example when you make the collapse a collapse has to be exactly in this field you know sometimes

the glider practically does not go in there or goes too flat or too steep But it has to go in there to rate it and to compare it because otherwise this is the definition of a norm. A norm is something always the same, simply said, you know. And this is then, you know, okay, we have done the certification and we have the practical behavior for cloud. Sometimes this is not always the same. But here we come to the duty obligation from the manufacturer, from designer, you know. Our job is mainly to make the glider fly like an E&A or E&P glider. So it's absolutely useless if I make

a glider which is certified in the category but behaves so fucking nasty that it's over demanding the pilot in this category. So it's a big responsibility for the manufacturer to make a glider practically work like it's certified. And this is one of our main goals always. If I make a big glider, high big glider, Okay, we push to place it really to the upper edge of this category. But still, when it's practically flown, all this practical behavior like your brake travel, turning, agility, or if it's nervous or whatever, or too demanding, or too much moving, whatever, or it's collapsing all the time, it's too less stable, or it has to be stable when you push the speed bar because the people don't

care. They say it's certified, it has to be working. So it's our job to make it also like the category. Not like the category, but saying it should behave in this category, I would say. And while I just can talk for myself, we put a lot of effort into this. And maybe this is leading over to the two-line E and C glider, which in the beginning, because we were the first ones, and I think one of the first questions was really like, oh a two-liner in e and c how will this behave is it demanding or how is it flying whatever nobody had an idea about it because previously it was

just the ccc and the d gliders and it was just saying oh it's just experts and it's yeah that is almost nice there's no no safety at all there and then suddenly it should be c and it's tested with falling lines so it doesn't say anything about the practical collapsing behavior so it must be dangerous you know this is what's typical thinking before and then people ask me how is it flying i said yeah actually like a sea glider you know how shall the sea glider fly yeah sure it should be manageable you know in a controlled manner but focusing on the performance shouldn't over demand you and and cause stable collapsing sure you get collapses even on a two-line glider but it has to be manageable and not

and not make you fall down or put your rescue so and and not nervous or the launch also take off behavior everything so and if you compare it to the previous three-line glider that wow if you get used to it it's it's not much difference believe me try it and yeah every glider we gave out that came back and said yeah actually stefan you're right it's a yeah it's a sea glider yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah and well we were actually one year ahead and we had the first year we were the only ones i think you see glad and actually we opened the market for everybody else because we we put a

put an acceptance into this market for two line letters and yeah but but it is like it is it's it's it's not like only certifying a glider in a c class which is mainly less of the program in designing a glider it's more like making the gotta fly like a e and c glider and you have to get this feeling from the demands like i said previously it doesn't matter which categories you have to feel into this category and say okay what are the characteristics in this category how should the glider fly doesn't matter if it's three-line glider for two-line cloud or whatever yeah you know i mean i i do understand my question was a bit open-ended but i'll tell you the dilemma behind the question That is when, as a pilot, you

want to progress. And, you know, the motivation of pilots to progress is different and depending upon how hard they want to chase and what their goals are and what kind of airtime they get. So, out of the school, it's a no-brainer. You can go for E&A and that's the safest, that will keep you, you know, that will stay over your head and that will make sure you have a good time. But the moment you start progressing, the amount of categories that have come in, the subcategories in the main categories are kind of making the question a bit more hazy. And the moment you take the question to your teacher or to someone like your mentor or something, it's like nobody wants to give you an advice that might put

them in a spot. It's like, hey, I told you to go on a high B and maybe high B is too hard for you. So when decision making comes to a pilot that I go from an E and A wing to an E and B wing? Do I go on a high B? Do I go on a low B or a mid B? Because every brand is promising some things. And eventually, because I mean, this again stems from the fact that I do believe the glider in a manner that it is a living thing, that when it interacts with you, when you're spending time under it, and when you're kind of, you know, basically working together to get the airtime. And same goes for the

two-liner C. So how do you upgrade? Because earlier there was a very simple progression that go E and A, go low B, and then go three-liner C. So it was like, okay, once you have spent enough airtime and hours, then all of this can't fall in place as they should be. But now it's like, should you go from E and A to a high B or from a high B to a two- liner C or should you stay on three-liners? So... As a designer, I understand you mentioned that you can just go out and feel how it is. But a lot of pilots in our community do not stay in Western Europe or do not have access to that kind

of dealers who stock all of these things. So when decision making comes to those kind of people who do not have the resources and internet and testimonials and website reviews and the information is the only way forward. Do you have any recommendation on how can they try and look at the homologation and the eventual upgradation plan? Because I myself come from India and I have had to make quite some tough decisions without a lot of support and information around it. So just for that aspect. Yeah. Safety in paragliding. I think it's We're going a little bit less

from the gliders now. We're going more to the pilot's abilities, I think. I think, yeah, like you said, the ENA glider, school glider has to tick all the boxes, most safest one, whatever. And then the question arises, can I progress which category, whatever? My point is always, like I say, Okay, a low B is still really okay if you're motivated and collect your experience, whatever. And then mid to high B, I think the trigger point is always for me, I say, okay, I cannot judge a pilot. If somebody asks me, for example, can I fly this guy? I don't know you. How shall I judge?
